Please consider adding the following information in this section:

The Chinese American Association of Greater Kalamazoo is a local nonprofit whose vision is to promote cultural awareness and pride through community service, events, and festivals.  Since 1981, they have held Chinese New Year celebrations, participated in Art Prize and other community events, offered workshops, and given art performances. Stop by on your way to the Friends' book sale to see a sampling of the many things that they offer to the community:

  • Chinese Tea Ceremonies: Experience the art and tradition of tea brewing which involve careful preparation and presentation. Learn about different types of teas, the significance of each step, and the cultural significance of tea in Chinese society.
  • Chinese Traditional Embroidery: A hands-on introduction to the intricate art of Chinese needlework. Learn techniques like silk shading while exploring the rich history and cultural significance behind this ancient craft.
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Basics: Explore the foundational principles of TCM, such as Qi (vital energy), Yin and Yang balance, and the Five Elements Theory. Learn how TCM approaches health and wellness, promoting harmony between the body and the mind.
  • Ba Duan Jin (Eight Pieces of Brocade): This is a traditional Chinese exercise (similar to Tai Chi) that consists of eight simple movements designed to promote health and well-being. Focused on stretching, breathing, and simple movements, Ba Duan Jin can help improve flexibility, balance, and circulation. Because it is low-impact and can be done standing, sitting, or lying down, Ba Duan Jin is widely accessible to seniors and people with physical limitations.
  • Wu Qin Xi (Five Animal Frolics): This is a traditional Chinese exercise system that mimics the movements of five animals: the Tiger, Deer, Bear, Monkey, and Crane. Each animal's movements focus on different parts of the body, improving flexibility, strength, balance, and coordination. Practicing Wu Qin Xi can enhance vitality, reduce stress, and bring joy through its playful and dynamic motions which makes it appealing to all ages.

The CAGK will have different areas set up in the café area where you can come in and learn more about whichever activities interest you. These topics are for informational purposes and will not be full workshops at this event.
